Maca

Maca, or Lepidium meyenii, is a root vegetable of the mustard family that grows exclusively in the Andes mountains of Peru. This resilient radish-like tuber grows in a habitat of intense cold, extreme sunlight, and strong winds and has used for its high nutrient content and presumed medicinal properties for thousands of years.

History

Maca root domestication predates the Incans, with primitive cultivars of maca being found in archaeological sites dating back to 1600 B.C. Before the arrival of the Spanish, thousands of acres of terraced fields had been planted with maca, stretching from Ecuador to northern Argentina.
During the Spanish conquest of America, both indigenous and Spanish soldiers used high dosage of Maca to prepare themselves for battle. The Spanish believed so strongly in the plant’s ability that they accepted 9 tons of maca each year as payment for their imperial tax.
In the late 1970’s political uprisings pushed maca close to extinction, but thanks to careful seed harvesting and the dedication of a few native families today there are more than 10,000 acres planted annually in Peru’s Altiplano.

Harvest

Maca grows very slowly, taking at least eight months to fully mature. Seeds are typically sowed in September, and harvested after the first hard, sustained freeze kills the tops of the root. The roots are harvested by hand, washed, and sun dried for several months before they are boiled and pulverized.

Anatomy

The principal and edible part of the plant is the hypocotyl-root axis that grows underground. This radish-like tuber that consists of the hypocotyl and root of the plant grows to be 6 inches long and 2 inches wide and contains high content of water.

Etymology

Maca, also known as Peruvian ginseng, originates from the Quechan word maqa which is what the Incans originally referred to the root as.
